Last month, several of us had another foray into the world of Tomorrow's War. Phil provided a scenario in which a force of New Anglian Confederation (NAC) infantry and APCs attempted to sweep through a Sahadeen village in search of prisoners and actionable intelligence.
Peter and I set up the Sahadeen in the village itself and in several areas of scrub covering the approaches likely to be used by the NAC. Phil and Bryan brought their troops in along two of those approaches; Phil moved ahead mounted and using terrain to limit the number of our forces that could fire on him. Bryan dismounted his troops to start with and covered them with his APC and a rise int he ground leading up to the area surrounding the village.
We got a chance to engage Bryan's troops first and (as I recall) immobilised the APC while it was busy shooting up one of Peter's advanced posts. Peter's men and the APC kept firing at each other, and a lucky shot from an RPG took out the APC, though its crew escaped. The NAC infantry moved up to the rise and began engaging us from there. Our being in cover negated the advantage they had in body armour, so the exchanges of fire tended to favour the defender (who only has to hold his ground).
On the other flank, Phil had used a hill to cover the approach of his troop-filled APC. Some more lucky shots from the Sahadeen (luckier than they should have been, we later discovered) took out this APC as well, with troops and crew debarking in a hurry. Here Phil ran into a problem, as the hill that had covered his approach also narrowed his line of advance. Unless his troops exposed themselves by coming up over the hill, they had to advance through a defile caused by the hill and the edge of the board. The Sahadeen in the ville concentrated their fire on the leading elements and did substantial damage, while only a few troops were able to get in position to return fire.
With Peter bringing up some of his desert fighters who had been in reserve positions covering other approaches, things were beginning to look bad for the NAC, so Bryan and Phil wisely disengaged and we ended the scenario.
We all enjoyed the game, and we are all building 15mm forces for it, so I expect we will be playing again soon.
